Running With a Jogging Stroller: 8 Tips To Keep Kids Cozy & Safe

It is always important to keep safety in mind when jogging; when running with a jogging stroller it’s even more important. Here are some tips to keep you and your little one safe, comfortable, and happy, when you’re out running with a jogging stroller.

  1. Is your baby old enough to be in a jogging stroller?

It isn’t safe to run with a baby that is younger than six months unless your jogging stroller is designed for it. Some jogging strollers allow for an adapter for use with a car seat. By using the jogging stroller with a car seat, you ensure your babies head and neck are well supported and stable; not bouncing around.

  1. Pack the essentials

Don’t forget to bring diapers, wipes, snacks, extra clothes, and a couple toys or books to keep your little one content. Don’t forget water, for both you and your child, it’s important to stay hydrated. A small first aid kit is also a good idea to have on hand. If your stroller is lacking in storage space; you can add more with a stroller organizer attachment. Keep your precious one entertained by clipping on some toys. Moms and dads can stay hydrated during long strolls, by attaching a handy cup holder.

  1. Make sure front wheel is locked

Some jogging strollers are made specifically for running and have a fixed front wheel, but many jogging strollers have a swiveling front wheel. Ensuring the front wheel is securely locked in place is essential when running with a jogging stroller. This will prevent the stroller from suddenly turning, which could cause the stroller to tip and you to crash and fall.

  1. Buckle up

Make sure any time your child is in the stroller, they are strapped in. The harness will keep your child from falling out, from bouncing around or getting shaken around. It will also keep those curious little hands from reaching out trying to grab a passing branch, or getting fingers caught in the wheel. A five-point harness is the safest.

  1. Check the weather

Dress your child appropriately, and pack a change of clothes just in case. Protect your little one’s soft skin by applying sunscreen and using the canopy of the stroller, some are even UV protectant. Be sure to Bundle them up when it’s cold, or chilly; remember even though you’re warm from running, they are not. Create a cozy environment with stroller blankets or mini clip-on fans, a rain cover, canopy extender, or even a mosquito net.

  1. Avoid traffic

Try to find places to run such as parks, trails, bike paths, and if on street, keep to the sidewalks. That way you won’t have to worry about traffic, and can enjoy your run. This will keep you and your baby safe and happy.

  1. Keep one hand on stroller at all times

The stroller can get away from you very quickly, and that could mean disaster for your child and anyone who happens to be in their path.  Switch off which hand your pushing with every few minutes, to be sure to get an even workout. Remember you should always be in control of your stroller. You don’t want to be going so fast that you are unable to stop the jogging stroller if need be.

  1. Fit runs into your child’s schedule

Be sure to pick a time that works with your child’s schedule. It is not a good idea to go for a jog right before meal time when your child is hungry. Right before nap time is a great time, the movement has been known to put little ones to sleep. Be sure to put a fresh diaper on your child before setting off, this will ensure they are nice and comfortable. Happy baby, happy life!
